Animal product design session 7

Wednesday 27th November 2014

Session Review

During today's brief session I have sketched additional drawings for my lion character; However, this time I have drawn some new ideas such as a roaring lion and one particular sketch which I continue to sketch is one that makes use of negative space to create eyes.

Another thing I need to improve upon was drawing he correct anatomy for a lion since I have been drawing from memory and my mind all this time not copying something; Although it may seem that I must return to observational drawing to add more realistic structure to my visual ideas.

Character Extract Creation session 4

Wednesday 26th November 2014

Session Review

Today's session was a surprise for I was expected to present the book I had chosen to Omid, then negotiate whether the book and extract were suitable; However, instead, the only mention of the book was whether we had produced initial sketches from the extract we have chosen; Although, in the brief, it clearly stated the book and extract must be negotiated first so I will still keep this in mind for next weeks session on Wednesday.

Instead, the class and I proceeded to experiment with clay and start creating the first stage for our character models, which was a wireframe with resin applied to the key joints. Thankfully Omid gave us the option of either creating the animal character from the first brief or the character forms our novel extracts; I had chosen to create the character Abraces from The Last Days of Pompeii since ancient Egypt interest along with the character himself.

Once the wireframe was built and the resin was applied trying to make the character stand on the CD stand was aggravating because of his tall structure he he fell on what substitute for a backside. So thanks to Omid I applied some wire as stands and some clay to stand to support him while the resin dried.

Overall this session was tedious, but enjoyable because the lesson felt like a refreshing new taste compared t the sketches we normally construct and present. I am still disheartened that the novel was not negotiated because I had originally expected this over the Worcester week.

Character Extract Creation session 3

Thursday 20th November 2014

Session Review

After continuing from  chapter one, page fourteen  Glaucus appears to be a cheerful fellow who even after losing the chariot race does not seem to care much. I have returned to page 14 and selected key verses depicted Glaucus features such as his tunic , necklace and slender athletic physical features.

As for a second book, I have considered either the book Skellig, which I read previously during my studies at secondary school; Also the title character Skellig is an intriguing mysterious , rough and weatherbeaten character throughout the book, and his gritty character may suit my rough drawing style. The third book I may choose is a novel that caught my interest a year ago a fantasy named The Republic of Thieves.

Character Extract Creation session 2

Wednesday 19th November 2014

Session Review

Today's session I have begun to read and study the book "The Last Days if Pompeii " and search for detailed descriptions. In the editor's note of the novel, it was mentioned how Lord Lyton produced excellent characterization so much so the characters seem to live within the pages. This statement proved true for when began to read the first chapter,  I was introduced to one of the main characters Glaucus and his description on page fourteen of the book was depicted magnificently listing almost every key feature of Glaucus appearance.

However, I will still proceed to search for a second book and I will not use a popular book that I own such as Star Wars or the Hobbit since I want to sketch a character and environment that has few illustrations or media created for it.

Character Extract Creation session 1

Tuesday 18th November 2014

Session Review

Following from last Wednesday's session I have chosen the novel "The Last Days of Pomepeii". The novel features a character named Arbaces an Egyptian sorcerer who is the most personally intriguing for me. So since my train to Worcester was delayed for hours which would last throughout the day, I went to the Birmingham museum to look once more at the Egyptian and Greek exhibits.

There was certainly allot more exhibits throughout the museum compared to last years visit which was pleasing. However I was able to draw quickly some ideas and rough sketches of Egyptian cartouches , amulets like the eye of Wydjat a symbol protection against the evil eye and the scarab beetle a symbol of regeneration because of the beetles long life.

Gruffalo Talk by Axel Scheffler

Tuesday 4th October 2014

Session Review

The talk by Axel Scheffler the illustrator of the famous Gruffalo certainly was interesting; Firstly detailing how he had started as a student, unsure of the direction he would be taking. The talk overall was very useful because despite Axel discussing many facts I have heard or experienced, he helped clarify any thoughts and rumours about the work-life of an illustrator.

Unfortunately, at the end of his presentation,  the exited line of people began to ready there books for signing I only wanted to ask him one to one questions such as what drawing equipment does he favour and use and how he presents his drawing portfolio.
